Certificat d’acceptation du Quebec (CAQ)

The province of Quebec is distinctive in the Canadian immigration scene with its CAQ. Because the federal government has provided Quebec with much more authority in administrating immigration laws and processes, Quebec’s immigration programs are frequently considered independent of the other provinces.

Foreign nationals wishing to study at a post-secondary institution in the province of Quebec must take an additional step in comparison to all other provinces and territories in Canada. A CAQ is required if a foreign person desires to study in Quebec for more than six months. Foreign nationals are only entitled to apply for a study permit once they have received a CAQ.

Apply for a CAQ

The following are the step-by-step steps for obtaining a certificat d’acceptation du Québec by a foreign person (CAQ)

Step 1

Letter of Acceptance

To apply for a CAQ, a foreign national must first establish that they have been accepted into a program of study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in the province of Quebec. This is shown by an acceptance letter, which is an official document provided by the school attesting to the student’s acceptance into a study program.

Step 1
Step 2

CAQ Documents

To prepare a CAQ application, a foreign national must first decide which papers are necessary. Document requirements vary greatly based on an applicant’s personal status and country of citizenship. Immigration Quebec’s website lists country-specific regulations. Make certain that your application is thorough, since any wrong information or missing papers may result in the denial of a CAQ, endangering your chances of success.

Step 2
Steps 3

CAQ Application

When a non-resident is ready to submit their CAQ, they can do so online at the Immigration Quebec website. The necessary data must be entered, and the application costs must be paid using a credit card. The foreign national must print the application, sign it, and mail it in hard copy to the Ministry of Immigration, Diversity, and Inclusion when the money has been made (MIDI). On CAQ applications, only authentic signatures will be allowed. The submission of any application without an original signature will be rejected.

Steps 3
Step 4

After CAQ is Received

After receiving their CAQ, applicants must apply to the federal government of Canada for a study visa. Except under extraordinary circumstances, foreign people will not be permitted to study in Canada unless they obtain a valid study permit. Please keep in mind that processing dates for CAQs vary according on the applicant’s country of citizenship as well as the amount of applications received by MIDI. Foreign nationals should plan ahead of time to ensure that they get both their CAQ and their study permit before their chosen start date.

Step 4

CAQ Requirements

When applying for a CAQ, applicants must ensure that they satisfy all of the standards specified by Quebec’s immigration agency, the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité, et de l’Inclusion (MIDI).

The following are the general prerequisites for remaining in Quebec as an international student, while the actual needs may differ from person to person. A foreign national must receive a CAQ for an educational program in Quebec.

  • Possess an acceptance letter from a DLI in Quebec
  • Pay all application fees for the processing of a CAQ
  • Commit to making studies their principal activity
  • Ensure that they have health and hospitalization insurance for the duration of their stay*
  • Demonstrate sufficient means of financial support to cover tuition costs and cost of living while residing in Quebec**
